The application is a web form. Assuming that is the whole process is how people end up thinking they are members when they are not.

The shape of it

1. Apply. The form asks for your role type and entity details, PAN, GST where applicable, permanent and present addresses, the territory you are applying for, whether you belong to any overseas society, and bank details for distributions. It also carries a work notification section listing your works, which has its own rules.

2. IPRS verifies it. You get told the application has been verified. This is not admission.

3. A physical set is couriered to you. Typically:

  • your application form and supporting documents, for self-attestation;
  • an Assignment Deed;
  • an Indemnity Bond;
  • an Amendment Deed, where applicable.

4. You sign and courier the whole set back, to the society’s registered address, marked for the membership desk.

5. Only then does membership complete.

IPRS is explicit that membership is not complete until the signed assignment deed is received, and that an application will eventually be cancelled if it is not. Verification in step 2 is not the finish line, and the gap between the two is where applications quietly die.

The witness, and the thing that gets forgotten

The return package must include the KYC documents of the witness, PAN or Voter ID.

That means you need a witness lined up before the set arrives, and you need their documents. It is easy to sign everything, courier it, and have the package be incomplete for want of a photocopy from someone who has since become hard to reach.

Two practical notes: keep the tracking for what you send, and expect a real turnaround, courier out, sign, courier back is a matter of days at best, not an afternoon.

Where the current requirements live

The documentation requirements differ by membership type and they change. IPRS publishes the current list on its own website, and that is the authority.
